Why you should have your own hosted site or blog

I have several wedding speech blogs and few of them are on the Blogger (that’s Blogspot.com) platform which is owned by Google. I generally rank quite high with the Blogger blogs on Google SERP and make some money from those. Yesterday morning when I was checking one of my blog’s position for some particular keywords in the search engine’s result page, to my horror it wasn’t there. Not in the first page, not in the second and not even in the last page. It was gone. But it Google still got it indexed, that’s the only the silver lining in this horror story. I checked with some of my friend’s blog and found that a few of their bogs are also missing. At least, I’m not alone - that’s a sort of consolation for me. Though personally I haven’t faced situations like this before, but many of my friends have and I know exactly what to do. But I was busy with another project yesterday and thought that I’d do the needful on the following day. But today morning when I checked back, guess what, it’s back. My Blogger blog is back on the Google SERP on top of the first page. Pheeeew! What a relief!

I don’t know if there is something as ‘Google slap’, and why Google should slap it’s own blogging platform. Whatever it may be, here’s a lesson for everyone of us. Don’t depend on a particular platform too mush especially when you are earning for it. During the last quarter of the previous year Google was believed to ’slap’ Squidoo Lenses for some reason and the site struggled to get back on the Google SERPs for quite some time. And that’s a huge problem. Even if your blog or site is perfectly ok, if Google somehow feels that there is something wrong with the platform, it will bring it down and you can’t escape the consequence. Sad, but true and it has happened more than once.

So, what’s the way out? Easy, have a web site hosted on a sever hired by you from a reputed web hosting service. And what about hosting a Wordpress blog? Ask any expert and you will learn that self-hosted Wordpres blog is one one of the best platforms you could consider for your online ventures. Not a big deal at all. If your web host has cPanel and Fantastico, you can host a Wordpress Blog in less than 5 minutes (the famous 5 minutes Wordpress install). And if your hosting service doesn’t have the cPanel control panel, you still can install Wordpress. You can download the latest version of Wordpress from Wordpress.org and follow the instructions to install it.

So, from now on when ever you have a niche in mind make sure you buy a domain name and hosting space and create a web site for it. But it’s always a good idea to test the niche on the free blogging platforms first before you invest. But whenever you areconfirmed that it is indeed a profitable niche to further work with do not hesitate to create an independently hosted web site for it.
